Ask, Seek, Knock
In the past month I have been reflecting on Jesus’ three simple yet life-changing invitations: “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you” (Matthew 7:7–8). As I have read, re-read and reflected on these words, often with cross references, I have discovered that these are not just an assurance of God that He answers prayers, but they are an invitation to draw closer to God in every season of life.
Ask and Receive
When we come to God with our
needs, we discover that He is a loving Father who delights in giving good gifts
to His children. We often ask for daily provisions: food, clothing, health,
stability, which He graciously provides. Yet, the greatest gift God is
willing to give to all who ask, as the panacea of all our needs, is the Holy
Spirit (Luke 11:13).
The Spirit is not merely a power,
but God Himself dwelling within us. He convicts us of sin, teaches us truth,
comforts us in trials, and empowers us for service. He gives gifts for
ministry, produces fruit of character, strengthens us in prayer, and assures us
that we belong to God. To ask is to open ourselves to receive the very presence
and power of God in our lives.
Seek and Find
Asking opens the door, but
seeking takes us deeper. Jesus calls us to “seek first the Kingdom of
God and His righteousness” (Matthew 6:33). The world urges us to chase
after possessions, success, and recognition, but Scripture reminds us that only
in God do we find lasting fulfillment.
Even Jesus faced temptations
appealing to human needs: hunger, security, and honor, yet He chose obedience
to the Father over worldly shortcuts. In the same way, our seeking must not be
for temporary pleasures, but for eternal treasures (Matt 6:33). God’s Kingdom
offers us His presence, authority, peace, power, and joy. Like a tree planted
by streams of water (Psalm 1), the one who delights in God’s Word and seeks His
ways will flourish.
Knock and Enter
Knocking speaks of persistence
and surrender. Revelation 3:20 pictures Jesus standing at the door of our
hearts, knocking and waiting for us to open to Him. When we do, He promises
fellowship and abundant life.
Scripture gives us powerful
images of doors: the door of new birth into God’s Kingdom (John 3), the door of
Christ Himself who offers salvation and life (John 10), doors of deliverance
like the prison doors that opened for Paul and Silas (Acts 16), and doors of
promise such as the Red Sea and Jordan parting for Israel. God holds the keys,
and when He opens a door, no one can shut it (Isaiah 22:22).
To knock is to keep coming, keep trusting, keep surrendering
until the right doors open. And when they do, we step into freedom, promise,
and God’s perfect will.
A Journey of Faith
Asking, seeking, and knocking are not one-time acts—they are
a lifelong rhythm of walking with God. We ask, and He fills us with His Spirit.
We seek, and He directs us into His Kingdom. We knock, and He opens doors into
deeper fellowship, greater freedom, and eternal hope.
So today, let us approach God with childlike faith:
- Ask Him
boldly.
- Seek Him
wholeheartedly.
- Knock with
perseverance.
For behind every prayer, every search, and every knock
stands a God who is eager to meet us with love, life, and lasting joy.
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for inviting me to ask, seek, and
knock. Teach me to trust You with my needs, to desire Your Kingdom above all
else, and to persevere until the right doors open. Fill me with Your Spirit,
guide me in Your truth, and let my life reflect Your glory. In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
