Dare to Be Different 3 : Lessons from Joshua’s Life
In a world where conformity often feels easier than conviction, the life of Joshua, son of Nun, stands out as a powerful reminder to dare to be different. From his early days as Moses’ assistant to his final words to Israel, Joshua’s journey reflects unwavering faith, courage, hope, leadership, and faithfulness.
Joshua first appeared as a warrior chosen by Moses to lead Israel into battle against the Amalekites (Exodus 17). Even then, he learned that victory came not from human strength but from God’s power. Later, when twelve spies were sent to scout the Promised Land, only Joshua and Caleb returned with faith-filled confidence in God’s promise. While the majority saw giants, Joshua saw an opportunity for God to display His might (Numbers 14:6–9).
As a leader, Joshua demonstrated integrity rooted in God’s Word. When commissioned, he was instructed to be strong and courageous, and to meditate on the Book of the Law day and night (Joshua 1). His leadership was not based on his own wisdom but on obedience to God. Perhaps his most defining moment came at the end of his life, when he called the people to choose whom they would serve. With bold conviction, he declared, “But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord” (Joshua 24:15).
Joshua’s story challenges us today. Will we follow the crowd, or will we stand with courage, even if it means standing alone? To “dare to be different” is to trust God’s promises when others doubt, to walk in obedience when others compromise, and to remain faithful until the end. Like Joshua, may we boldly declare our commitment to serve the Lord in every season of life.
