Matthew 3:16 The Holy Spirit: In the Gospels and for Christians Today


Matthew 3:16

When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw  the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him.

From the opening chapters of the Gospels to the life of the Church today, the Holy Spirit is not a silent observer but the active presence of God at work. The story of Jesus Christ is, at every crucial point, a Spirit-saturated story—and that same Spirit continues to shape Christian faith and life today.

The Gospels introduce Jesus through the work of the Holy Spirit. He is conceived by the Spirit, announced by Spirit-filled voices, and publicly anointed at His baptism when the Spirit descends upon Him. Jesus’ ministry unfolds under the Spirit’s leading and power: He preaches good news, heals the sick, casts out demons, and proclaims the Kingdom of God “by the Spirit of God.” Even the cross and resurrection are not moments of divine absence. Scripture testifies that Christ offered Himself through the eternal Spirit and was raised in power by the Spirit, marking the dawn of new creation.

The Gospels also make clear that the Spirit’s work does not end with Jesus’ earthly ministry. Before His ascension, Jesus promises the Holy Spirit as a permanent gift—God’s own presence with His followers forever. The risen Christ breathes the Spirit upon His disciples, signaling continuity between His mission and the Church’s calling.

For Christians today, the Holy Spirit remains central to faith and life. The Spirit brings new birth, enables believers to confess Jesus as Lord, and illuminates Scripture so it speaks with living power. The Spirit shapes Christlike character, producing love, humility, holiness, and perseverance. He empowers the Church for witness, unites believers into one body, and distributes gifts for service and mutual edification.

Above all, the Holy Spirit assures believers that God is still at work—guiding, sustaining, and renewing His people. To follow Christ today is to live by the same Spirit who was present at Bethlehem, the Jordan, Calvary, and the empty tomb, until Christ comes again.
