Acts asks: “What happened to Paul?” Philippians 3 answers: “Why did Paul live like that?” This simple summary beautifully connects the visible story of Paul’s life with the invisible passion that drove him.
From Acts 9 to Acts 28, we follow Paul through dramatic events—his encounter with Jesus on the road to Damascus, his missionary journeys, imprisonments, beatings, trials, storms, shipwrecks, and finally his arrival in Rome. These chapters show us the footsteps of Paul. We see where he went, what he suffered, and how faithfully he endured.
But Philippians 3 opens the window into Paul’s heart. It tells us what was happening inside him. Paul says, “I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord.” This is the reason behind every sacrifice. Paul did not live for comfort, reputation, or success. He lived to know Christ.
His strength came from “the power of His resurrection.” Through every prison and persecution, Paul was sustained not by human courage alone, but by the living power of Christ within him. His suffering was not meaningless; it was fellowship with Jesus. His goal was not Rome, but the upward call of God in Christ.
Acts gives us the visible journey. Philippians 3 gives us the invisible engine. One shows the road, the other reveals the reason.
This is also our lesson today. Christianity is not merely about activity, ministry, or achievements. It is first about Christ Himself. To know Him is the purpose. To follow Him is the path. To press on through suffering is the calling. And Christ Himself is the prize.
One journey. One heart. One goal.
To know Christ is worth every loss, every step of obedience, and every sacrifice along the way.
