Hebrews 12 begins with a simple instruction: “Fixing our eyes on Jesus.”
The Christian journey is a race, and Jesus is both our Pioneer and Perfecter. He has gone before us, endured the cross, and completed the journey. We follow Him, not because the road will always be easy, but because He has already walked it.
Then comes a challenging invitation: “Endure hardship as discipline.” Hebrews 12:7
Hardship is not always a sign that something has gone wrong. Sometimes it becomes the very place where God is doing His deepest work in us.
The word discipline carries the idea of training and formation. God, like a loving Father, uses the pressures of the journey to strengthen what is weak, correct what is crooked, and shape what is unfinished.
But there can be purpose in the process.
And then Hebrews reveals the goal: “God disciplines us for our good, in order that we may share in his holiness.” Hebrews 12:10
This is where the journey leads: HOLINESS.
God is not merely trying to make us stronger people who can withstand more hardship. He is making us holy people who increasingly reflect His character.
So perhaps the better question during a difficult season is not only:
“Lord, when will this end?”
but also:
“Lord, what are You forming in me through this?”
Because sometimes God does His deepest work not by removing the pressure, but by using the pressure to reshape us.
Hebrews therefore calls us: “Make every effort ... to be holy.” Hebrews 12:14
Holiness is not perfection achieved by our own effort. It is a life increasingly surrendered to the One who is perfecting us.
So keep looking to Jesus.
The race is not merely about getting to the finish line.
It is about becoming the person God is shaping us to be along the way.
Endurance keeps me in the race.
Hardship becomes my training ground.
Discipline forms my character.
Holiness becomes my fruit.
And Jesus leads me all the way home.
